There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
Yogi, make humility your earrings, and make kindness your patched coat.
Let the coming and going of life be the ash you rub on your skin, Yogi, and then you win all three worlds.
The truest signs of a seeker are worn on the inside.
A yogi is someone who follows a path of meditation and self-control. Many yogis wore big earrings, a patched coat, and ash rubbed on the skin. These showed they had left ordinary life behind. This shabad is a long, gentle talk with such a yogi.
Sarmai dee-aa mundraa kannee paa-ay jogee — Yogi, make humility your earrings. Khinthaa kar too da-i-aa — make compassion your patched coat. Aavan jaan bibhoot laa-ay jogee — let the coming and going of life be the ash you wear. That means seeing clearly that everything comes and goes.
Think of a school uniform. It shows which school you go to. The way you treat people shows who you are. Live like this, and taa teen bhavan jin la-i-aa — you win the three worlds, meaning everything there is. That win comes from inner freedom, not force.
What would humility and compassion look like if you “wore” them every day?
