Caught in the Three Qualities

tarai gun achayt naam cheeteh naahee bin naavai binas jaa-ee. ||15||
Trapped by the three qualities, the unconscious person does not think of the Naam; without the Name, he wastes away. ||15||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Caught by three forces — the pull to rest, the pull to rush, the pull to grab — the half-asleep mind does not think of the Naam.

Without the Naam, a person's life wears away.

Caught in the three pulls, the half-asleep mind forgets the Naam.
The deeper layer

Trai gun are the three qualities of nature (in the old teaching: stillness, restless motion, and heaviness — here glossed as rest, rush, and grab). The achet (unaware) mind, tossed among them, forgets naam. The remedy is waking up, not condemnation.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel “half-asleep” to what matters most?
