Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 92
Verse 4 of 28

Let the Word Burn What Clings

ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਈ ॥੩॥
aap chhod naam liv laagee mamtaa sabad jalaa-ee. ||3||
Eradicating self-conceit, remain lovingly focused on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; through the Word of the Shabad, burn away possessiveness. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Set down the heavy idea that you are the center of everything, and rest your attention on the Name instead.

The teaching, like a warm fire, quietly burns away the grasping “mine, mine, mine” that ties you in knots.

Set down “me and mine,” and you feel lighter.
The deeper layer

Aap chhod — letting go of self-conceit, an emptying of hands rather than self-punishment. Attention rests on naam, and the shabad (the Word, the teaching) burns mamtaa (possessiveness, the “mine” that binds).

A Question to Sit With

What's something you hold too tightly?
