Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 93
Verse 15 of 22

Pretending Never Pays

The Messenger of Death does not give up on those who practices hypocrisy; they are dragged away in disgrace. ||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Pretending to be holy does not keep death away.

In the end, the one who pretends is led away, and their honor is lost.

Pretending cannot protect you, and it costs you your honor.
The deeper layer

Pakhand is hypocrisy — the pretense of holiness. Jam, death's messenger, stands for the end that every life meets; a show of holiness cannot shield anyone from it, and honor built on pretending is lost.

Being honest is lighter than keeping up a mask.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel when you can stop pretending and just be yourself?
