Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 94
Verse 22 of 31

Arguing or Loving

ਬਾਦੀ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥੨੧॥
baadee binsahi sayvak sayveh gur kai hayt pi-aaree. ||21||
The debaters waste away, while the servants serve, with love and affection for the Guru. ||21||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People who only argue to win waste away.

But those who serve keep serving, with love and warm affection for the Guru.

Love and quiet service outlast the need to win an argument.
The deeper layer

Baadee binsahi, sayvak sayveh — the debaters fade; the servers serve. Baad is quarrelsome argument for its own sake; it burns out. Loving service (sayvaa) with hayt (affection) for the Guru endures. The contrast is between winning and loving — and only one of them lasts.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how tiring it is to always need to be right?
