Verse 9 of 22

Givers, Askers, All Arranged

ਇਕਿ ਦਾਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥੮॥
ik daatay ik mangtay keetay aapay bhagat karaa-ee. ||8||
Some are made givers, and some are made beggars; He Himself inspires us to devotional worship. ||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some people are placed where they can give; some are placed where they must ask.

And the love that rises in a heart toward the One — the One awakens that too.

Even the love you feel for the One is a gift the One awakens.
The deeper layer

Ik daatay ik mangtay — givers and askers, roles within one arrangement, not a ranking of worth. Even devotion (bhagat) is stirred by the One, received as grace.

A Question to Sit With

Is love something you decide, or something that rises in you?
