Forests, Silence, and My Simple Shelter

ਕਿਨਹੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਵਣ ਖੰਡਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kinhee garihu taj van khand paa-i-aa.
Some abandon their homes, and live in the forests.
ਕਿਨਹੀ ਮੋਨਿ ਅਉਧੂਤੁ ਸਦਾਇਆ ॥
kinhee mon a-uDhoot sadaa-i-aa.
Some put themselves on silence, and call themselves hermits.
ਕੋਈ ਕਹਤਉ ਅਨੰਨਿ ਭਗਉਤੀ ॥
ko-ee kahta-o annan bhag-utee.
Some claim that they are devotees of the One Lord alone.
ਮੋਹਿ ਦੀਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਓਟ ਲੀਤੀ ॥੨॥
mohi deen har har ot leetee. ||2||
I am meek; I seek the shelter and support of the Lord, Har, Har. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some leave their homes and go live in the deep woods.

Some keep silent and call themselves hermits.

Some say they are devoted to the One alone.

And I, with empty hands, take shelter in the One.

Shelter in the One is open to you wherever you already are.
The deeper layer

Some search in the forest, some in silence. The answer here is simple: take shelter in the One.

Garihu taj van khand paa-i-aa — some leave their homes and go live in the forest. Mon means silence: some stop speaking for long stretches. A-uDhoot is a hermit, someone who gives up ordinary life. Others say they belong to the One alone.

These are serious paths, and Guru Arjan names them honestly.

Then comes his answer: har har ot leetee — I take shelter in the One. Ot means shelter, like ducking under a porch roof when rain starts. It is not something he achieved. It is a place he runs to and is let in.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go for shelter when things feel hard?
