Verse 9 of 9

Only the Name Wakes the Heart

ਸਗਲੇ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਜੁਗ ਸੋਧੇ ॥
saglay karam Dharam jug soDhay.
I have studied the religions and rituals of all the ages.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨ ਪ੍ਰਬੋਧੇ ॥
bin naavai ih man na parboDhay.
Without the Name, this mind is not awakened.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਉ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kaho naanak ja-o saaDhsang paa-i-aa.
Says Nanak, when I found the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy,
ਬੂਝੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਹਾ ਸੀਤਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੧॥
boojhee tarisnaa mahaa seetlaa-i-aa. ||8||1||
my thirsty desires were satisfied, and I was totally cooled and soothed. ||8||1||

In plain words

I have looked into all the ways and rituals people have followed through the ages.

Without the Naam, this mind does not wake up.

Nanak says: when I found the Sangat, the people who gather to remember the One,

my burning thirst was quenched, and I was cooled and soothed all through.

The Naam and the Sangat together cool a restless heart.
The deeper layer

Every path of every age leaves the mind asleep without the Naam. The Naam and the Sangat together bring the restless heart to rest.

Saglay karam Dharam jug soDhay — I have looked into all the rituals and ways of every age. Bin naavai ih man na parboDhay — without the Name, this mind does not wake up. ParboDhay means to be woken up inside.

Kaho naanak ja-o saaDhsang paa-i-aa — says Nanak, when I found the saaDhsang, the Sangat: people gathered together to remember the One.

Boojhee trisnaa mahaa seetlaa-i-aa — my trisnaa, the thirst that always wants more, was quenched, and I was deeply cooled. Think of coming in from a long, hot day and drinking a glass of cold water. The whole body sighs. The Naam and the Sangat together cool the restless heart.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people whose company leaves you calmer and better?
