The One Here and Everywhere

ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਏਕੈ ਓਹੀ ॥
eehaa oohaa aykai ohee.
Here and there, only the One God exists.
ਜਤ ਕਤ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਤਤ ਤਤ ਤੋਹੀ ॥
jat kat daykhee-ai tat tat tohee.
Wherever I look, there You are.
ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵਤ ਮਨਿ ਆਲਸੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
tis sayvat man aalas karai.
My mind is reluctant to serve Him;
ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਸਰਿਐ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਸਰੈ ॥੭॥
jis visri-ai ik nimakh na sarai. ||7||
forgetting Him, I cannot survive, even for an instant. ||7||

In plain words

In this world and beyond it, there is only the One.

Wherever I turn my eyes, there You are.

And yet my mind drags its feet — even though I could not last a single moment without You.

The One we sometimes drag our feet toward is the One we cannot live a moment without.
The deeper layer

The One is everywhere, and yet the mind is slow to turn toward that One.

Eehaa oohaa aykai ohee — here and there, in this world and beyond it, there is only the One. Jat kat daykhee-ai tat tat tohee — wherever I look, there You are.

Then comes an honest line. Tis sayvat man aalas karai — my mind is lazy about serving. Aalas means laziness, dragging your feet. Everyone knows this feeling. You know homework matters, and still you put it off.

Guru Arjan names this gently. It is an ordinary human thing, nothing to be upset about. And he names the other side too: forgetting the One, ik nimakh na sarai, I cannot last even a single moment.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing do you sometimes put off, even though it always helps you?
