Traveling, Fighting, Teaching — and Praise

ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਚਾਲਤ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai din rain chaalat.
Some pass their lives walking day and night.

Some pass their lives on the fields of battle.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਬਾਲ ਪੜਾਵਤ ॥

Some pass their lives teaching children.
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ॥੫॥
sant bihaavai har jas gaavat. ||5||
The Saints pass their lives singing the Lord's Praise. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some spend their days always on the move, walking through day and night.

Some spend them on fields of battle.

Some spend them teaching children.

And the saints spend their days singing the One's praise.

Every kind of work fills a life — the question is what fills the work.
The deeper layer

Travelers, soldiers and teachers each fill their days. Through all of it, praise of the One comes back like a chorus.

Kaahoo bihaavai din rain chaalat — some spend life walking day and night, always on the move. Pirh maalat — some spend it on the battlefield. Baal parhaavat — some spend it teaching children.

It is a wide view of human life. Each kind of work is named, and none is ranked above the others. A teacher and a traveler are both doing their part.

Then the song lands in the same place again. Sant bihaavai har jas gaavat — the saints spend their days singing the One's praise. Jas means praise.

Think of a song with a chorus. The verses change every time, but the chorus comes back. In this song, praise is the chorus.

A Question to Sit With

What work would you love to fill your days with someday?
