Fire Melts Cold, Soap Cleans Cloth

ਜਿਉ ਪਾਵਕ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੀਤ ਕੋ ਨਾਸ ॥
ji-o paavak sang seet ko naas.
As cold is dispelled by fire,
ਐਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਛਤ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥
aisay paraachhat satsang binaas.
sins are driven out in the Society of the Saints.
ਜਿਉ ਸਾਬੁਨਿ ਕਾਪਰ ਊਜਲ ਹੋਤ ॥
ji-o saabun kaapar oojal hot.
As cloth is cleaned by soap,
ਨਾਮ ਜਪਤ ਸਭੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਖੋਤ ॥੫॥
naam japat sabh bharam bha-o khot. ||5||
just so, by chanting the Naam, all doubts and fears are dispelled. ||5||

In plain words

As fire drives out the cold,

so wrongs are driven out in the Sangat.

As soap makes cloth clean and bright,

so chanting the Naam clears away every doubt and fear.

The Sangat and the Naam work on the heart the way fire works on cold.
The deeper layer

The heart gets clean the way cold hands warm by a fire and cloth comes bright with soap.

Ji-o paavak sang seet ko naas — fire melts away the cold. Paavak is fire. Think of warming your hands by a heater on a winter night.

Aisay paraachhat satsang binaas — in the same way, old wrongs melt away in satsang. Satsang is the Sangat: people gathered together to remember the One. Paraachhat means the wrongs we have done.

Ji-o saabun kaapar oojal hot — soap makes cloth clean and bright.

Naam japat sabh bharam bha-o khot — repeating the Name clears away all doubt and fear. Japat means saying the Name again and again, with love.

These are everyday pictures. Warmth, soap, a clean shirt. Getting fresh inside can be as simple as that, when we stay close to the Sangat and to the Naam.
