Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 99
Verse 5 of 9

Joy Like Sight Returning

ਜਿਉ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਪੇਖਤ ਹੋਇ ਅਨੰਦ ॥
ji-o anDhulay paykhat ho-ay anand.
As the blind man is in ecstasy, when he can see again;
ਗੂੰਗਾ ਬਕਤ ਗਾਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਛੰਦ ॥
goongaa bakat gaavai baho chhand.
and the mute, when he is able to speak and sing songs;
ਪਿੰਗੁਲ ਪਰਬਤ ਪਰਤੇ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
pingul parbat partay paar.
and the cripple, being able to climb over the mountain
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਗਲ ਉਧਾਰਿ ॥੪॥
har kai naam sagal uDhaar. ||4||
- just so, the Name of the Lord saves all. ||4||

In plain words

Someone who could not see is filled with joy on seeing again.

Someone who could not speak now speaks and sings song after song.

Someone who could not walk now climbs right over the mountain.

Just so, the Name of the One lifts and saves everyone.

The Name brings the joy of a locked door suddenly swinging open.
The deeper layer

The Name brings the joy of the impossible becoming possible.

The verse gives three pictures of sudden joy.

Ji-o anDhulay paykhat ho-ay anand — someone who could not see now sees, and fills with delight. Anand means deep joy.

Goongaa bakat gaavai baho chhand — someone who could not speak now sings song after song.

Pingul parbat partay paar — someone who could not walk now climbs right over a mountain.

Each picture is about being set free and bursting with joy. Think of the moment the training wheels come off and you are riding on your own. Suddenly you can do what felt impossible.

Then the point. Har kai naam sagal uDhaar — the Name lifts up everyone. Sagal means all. No one is left out.

A Question to Sit With

When has something you thought impossible suddenly become possible?
