Verse 4 of 9

As a Farmer Guards His Field

ਕਿਰਸਾਨੀ ਜਿਉ ਰਾਖੈ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥
kirsaanee ji-o raakhai rakhvaalaa.
As the farmer protects his fields;
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਇਆ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲਾ ॥
maat pitaa da-i-aa ji-o baalaa.
as the mother and father show compassion to their child;
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
pareetam daykh pareetam mil jaa-ay.
as the lover merges on seeing the beloved;
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
ti-o har jan raakhai kanth laa-ay. ||3||
just so does the Lord hug His humble servant close in His Embrace. ||3||

In plain words

A farmer watches over the field he has planted.

A mother and father pour tenderness on their child.

Two who love each other run into each other's arms the moment they meet.

Just so, the One hugs the One's humble servant close.

The One holds you the way the most loving people you know would hold you.
The deeper layer

The One cares for you like the most loving care you know: a farmer's, a parent's, a loved one's.

The verse gives three pictures of people who care.

Kirsaanee ji-o raakhai rakhvaalaa — a farmer guards his field. He checks it early and late, and chases away the birds.

Maat pitaa da-i-aa ji-o baalaa — a mother and father are kind to their child. Da-i-aa means kindness.

Preetam daykh preetam mil jaa-ay — two people who love each other rush to meet. Preetam means the dearly loved one.

Then the point. Ti-o har jan raakhai kanth laa-ay — just so, the One holds the humble servant close. Kanth laa-ay means hugging someone to your chest.

Think of the best hug you have ever had. Now imagine that care, but bigger than every parent and friend put together. That is what grace feels like here.

A Question to Sit With

Who holds you close when you need it?
