Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 99
Verse 3 of 9

Water to the Thirsty, the Name to the Servant

ਜਲੁ ਪੀਵਤ ਜਿਉ ਤਿਖਾ ਮਿਟੰਤ ॥
jal peevat ji-o tikhaa mitant.
As thirst is quenched by drinking water;
ਧਨ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਆਵਤ ਕੰਤ ॥
Dhan bigsai garihi aavat kant.
as the bride blossoms forth when her husband comes home;
ਲੋਭੀ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
lobhee kaa Dhan paraan aDhaar.
as wealth is the support of the greedy person
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
ti-o har jan har har naam pi-aar. ||2||
- just so, the humble servant of the Lord loves the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||2||

In plain words

Cool water ends a burning thirst.

A bride glows with joy when her husband comes home.

For a greedy person, money is what life leans on.

Just so, the One's humble servant loves the Name of the One.

What water is to thirst, the Name is to the heart that loves the One.
The deeper layer

A loving heart needs the Name the way a thirsty person needs water.

The verse gives three pictures, and each one shows a deep need.

Jal peevat ji-o tikhaa mitant — drinking water ends thirst. Think of coming in from a hot game and gulping cold water.

Dhan bigsai garihi aavat kant — a bride glows with joy when her husband comes home. It is the delight of being together again after missing someone.

Lobhee kaa Dhan paraan aDhaar — for a greedy person, money is what they lean on. Lobhee means greedy. Even this picture is used for good. It shows how completely a heart can hold on to one thing.

Then the point. Ti-o har jan har har naam pi-aar — just so, the One's own people love the Name. They hold on to it as tightly as all of these. But this is a love that fills you up.

A Question to Sit With

What are you so glad to have that it feels like water on a hot day?
