When the Light Spreads and the Fever Breaks

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮਦ ਮਤਸਰ ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਖਾਪ ॥

Sexual desire, anger, greed, pride and envy are destroyed in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

He is the Lover of His devotees, the Destroyer of fear; O Nanak, He is our Mother and Father. ||2||77||100||

In plain words

Wanting, anger, greed, pride and envy all wear away in the Sangat.

Nanak says: the One loves the devotees, cuts away fear, and is our Mother and Father.

In the Sangat the heavy feelings loosen, and the One holds you like both a mother and a father.
The deeper layer

In the Sangat, the heavy feelings inside lose their power. The One is like a mother and a father who take away our fear.

The verse names five: kaam (wanting), kroDh (anger), lobh (greed), mad (pride) and matsar (envy). Here they are like inner weather — storms that pass when we sit in the Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One. They are not things to be ashamed of. Think of being in a grumpy mood and then spending time with a cheerful friend. The clouds just clear.

Bhagat vachhal means the One who loves those who love back. Bhai kaatanhaaray means the One who cuts away fear. Maa-ee baap means Mother and Father. Guru Arjan loves this picture of the One. It is the fullest, safest love there is.

A Question to Sit With

When has being around the right people made a big feeling shrink back down to size?
