My Beloved, My Very Breath

ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਭਏ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਜਨੀ ਦੂਤ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ॥
pareetam paraan bha-ay sun sajnee doot mu-ay bikh khaa-ee.
My Beloved is my breath of life - listen, O my companion. The demons have taken poison and died.
ਜਬ ਕੀ ਉਪਜੀ ਤਬ ਕੀ ਤੈਸੀ ਰੰਗੁਲ ਭਈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ॥੫॥
jab kee upjee tab kee taisee rangul bha-ee man bhaa-ee. ||5||
As love for Him welled up, so it remains. My mind is imbued with His Love. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Listen, my friend: the One I love has become my very breath. And the harmful pulls that used to trouble me — the anger, the greed, the restlessness — have quietly lost their grip and faded away.

The love that first welled up in me is still exactly that alive today. My whole heart is colored through with it.

Love, once kindled, does not grow stale.
The deeper layer

doot mu-ay bikh khaa-ee: the troublemakers have eaten poison and are gone. They are the inner enemies of anger, greed, and attachment. Fed nothing, they lose their grip and dissolve. jab kee upjee tab kee taisee means the first freshness of love has not faded — it remains dyed-in, coloring the whole mind.

A Question to Sit With

What kind of love in your life has only grown steadier over time?
