A Steady Mind, a Sweet Word

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਾਚੀ ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਅਕਥੁ ਨ ਕਥੈ ਕਹਾਨੀ ॥
manmukh buDh kaachee manoo-aa dolai akath na kathai kahaanee.
The intellect of the self-willed manmukh is false; his mind wavers and wobbles, and he cannot speak the Unspoken Speech.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਨੀ ॥੩॥
gurmat nihchal har man vasi-aa amrit saachee baanee. ||3||
Following the Guru's Teachings, the Eternal Unchanging Lord abides within the mind; the True Word of His Bani is Ambrosial Nectar. ||3||

In plain words

A mind turned only toward itself is easily fooled. It wobbles and wavers, and it cannot speak of what is deepest.

A mind that follows the Guru's teaching grows steady. The Everlasting One comes to live inside it, and the True Word turns sweet as nectar.

A mind turned only on itself wobbles; a mind that listens steadies.
The deeper layer

A mind turned on itself wobbles; the Guru's teaching makes it steady.

Manmukh means a mind turned only toward itself. This describes a state any of us can fall into, not a label for a person. BuDh kaachee means its thinking is weak and easily fooled. Manoo-aa dolai means the mind wobbles and wavers.

The opposite is gurmat nihchal: a mind made steady by the Guru's teaching. The Eternal One comes to live there. And the baanee, the Guru's Word, turns sweet like amrit, nectar.

Think of a wobbly table. Put one good leg under it, and suddenly you can set a full glass of water on top.

A Question to Sit With

What makes your mind wobble, and what makes it steady?
