Only the One Is True

mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
rannaa ho-ee-aa boDhee-aa puras ho-ay sa-ee-aad.
Women have become advisors, and men have become hunters.
seel sanjam such bhannee khaanaa khaaj ahaaj.
Humility, self-control and purity have run away; people eat the uneatable, forbidden food.
saram ga-i-aa ghar aapnai pat uth chalee naal.
Modesty has left her home, and honor has gone away with her.
naanak sachaa ayk hai a-or na sachaa bhaal. ||2||
O Nanak, there is only One True Lord; do not bother to search for any other as true. ||2||

In plain words

When people let go of the gentle things — humility, self-control, honesty, a sense of care about doing right — life starts to feel shaky, and the quiet dignity that comes with those qualities slips away too.

But here is what stays steady. Nanak says there is only One who is true. You do not have to go hunting everywhere for something solid to stand on. That steadiness is already here, waiting to be recognized.

When everything feels shaky, remember there is one steady thing that is always real.
The deeper layer

When good ways slip, the One stays true.

Guru Nanak grieves a time when seel sanjam such — humility, self-control and purity — have run away, and honor has left with them. These are qualities anyone can lose and anyone can bring back. Then comes the steady ground: sachaa ayk hai a-or na sachaa bhaal — only One is true; look for no other.

A Question to Sit With

What are the quiet qualities — like honesty or self-control — that keep a person steady?
