Sikhism·Raag Saarang·Shabad 174
Verse 2 of 4

What Outward Effort Misses

kaam na bisri-o kroDh na bisri-o lobh na chhooti-o dayvaa.
You have not forgotten sexual desire, and you have not forgotten anger; greed has not left you either.
ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਛੂਟੀ ਨਿਫਲ ਭਈ ਸਭ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੧॥
par nindaa mukh tay nahee chhootee nifal bha-ee sabh sayvaa. ||1||
Your mouth has not stopped slandering and gossiping about others. Your service is useless and fruitless. ||1||

In plain words

Wanting, anger, and grabbing for more are all still here.

Unkind words about others still slip out. When that is true, all the outward effort adds up to little.

Outward effort means little while the heart stays unchanged.
The deeper layer

Doing all the outward things means little if anger, greed and unkind words are still inside.

The verse lists what outer religion can leave untouched. Kaam is strong wanting. KroDh is anger. Lobh is greed. And par nindaa, talking badly about others, still slips out of the mouth.

So all the service, done only on the outside, adds up to little.

This is a mirror to hold up to ourselves, not a stick to poke at others. Think of cleaning your room by shoving everything under the bed. It looks tidy, but the mess is still there.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

What is one habit of the heart you would most like to soften?
