Verse 2 of 3

Every Part of Me Made Bright

ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਭਏ ਦਰਸੁ ਪੇਖੇ ਹਸਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਟਹਲਾਵਾ ॥
naytar puneet bha-ay daras paykhay hasat puneet tehlaavaa.
The eyes are sanctified, gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan. Serving Him, the hands are sanctified.
ਰਿਦਾ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਸਿਓ ਮਸਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਸੰਤ ਧੂਰਾਵਾ ॥੧॥
ridaa puneet ridai har basi-o masat puneet sant Dhooraavaa. ||1||
The heart is sanctified, when the Lord abides within the heart; that forehead which touches the dust of the feet of the Saints is sanctified. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My eyes grow clear and clean when they look upon the One; my hands grow clean when they help and serve.

My heart grows clean when the One lives inside it, and even my forehead is blessed when I bow low among humble people who love the One.

A part of you becomes clean not by scrubbing it, but by what you point it toward.
The deeper layer

Each part of you becomes clean by what it is turned toward.

The verse goes through the body one part at a time. Naytar are the eyes, hasat the hands, ridaa the heart, and masat the forehead. Each one becomes puneet, which means pure or clean.

But the cleaning here is not with soap. The eyes become clean by looking at the One. The hands become clean by helping and serving. The heart becomes clean when the One lives inside it.

The forehead becomes clean by touching sant dhooraavaa, the dust of the feet of the saints. That is a picture of bowing low and setting pride aside.

Think of a sunflower. It does not scrub itself to shine. It just keeps turning toward the sun.

A Question to Sit With

What is something your hands could do today that would make them clean in this way?
