In that place where your mother, father, children and siblings shall be of no use to you at all, there, the Name alone shall save you. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

I hold the Name close, the friend who stays with me right to the very end of the journey.

Even in the places our dearest people — mother, father, brothers and sisters — cannot follow, the One is there, keeping me safe.

There is a friend who stays with you even where no one else can follow.
The deeper layer

The Naam is a friend who stays with us all the way to the very end.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad.

The verse looks at the far edge of life, and it does not bring fear. It brings company. Naam sakhaa means the Name as a friend. Ant baar means at the very last. There is one journey that even mother, father, children and brothers cannot take with us. The Name walks that path beside us.

Think of a child's first day at a new school. A parent can walk them to the gate, but not into the class. Now picture a friend who can go all the way in. Too rakhaa means You are the keeper. The comfort is not that we go alone. It is that we never do.

A Question to Sit With

What does it mean to you to have a friend who would stay with you no matter what?
