The five old troublemakers inside me, the cravings and angers, used to boss me around. Now the Guru has made them my helpers instead of my masters.
My mind grew steady and unafraid. It does not come and go; it no longer wanders or wobbles. Nanak says, the calm kingdom I found inside cannot be shaken.
Strong feelings can become our helpers instead of our bosses.
The panch are the five inner thieves: craving, anger, greed, clinging, and pride. The Guru does not destroy them. They become vasgat, brought under control. They turn from masters into servants.
Then the mind is nihchal, steady, and nirbha-i-aa, fearless. Aa-ay na jaavai — it does not come and go. It does not wobble or wander. Thir naanak raaja-i-aa — Nanak's inner kingdom stays firm forever.
Think of a strong horse. Once you learn to ride it, its strength carries you instead of throwing you off. Being free does not mean having no feelings. It means feelings no longer rule you.
What is a strong feeling that sometimes bosses you around, and how might you become its master instead?
