Whoever is a chaylaa (a servant) goes only to his Lord and Master. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Wherever anyone goes, the mind turns to its own.

Whoever serves someone goes only to their Master.

You turn, all on your own, toward the One you belong to.
The deeper layer

Our minds turn, all on their own, toward the ones we belong to.

Apuno hee chit aavai means "one's mind goes to one's own." This is the "pause" line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. Chayro means a devoted helper or student. The verse gently notices that everyone leans toward whoever they belong to.

Think of how you look for your family's faces in the crowd after a school concert. You don't have to decide to. Your eyes just go there. For the one who belongs to the One, turning toward the One becomes just as natural. That easy, natural pull is called sahaj.

A Question to Sit With

Where does your mind go on its own when things get hard — who or what do you turn toward?
