A Simple, Honest Asking

ਦੀਨ ਬੰਧਰੋ ਦਾਸ ਦਾਸਰੋ ਸੰਤਹ ਕੀ ਸਾਰਾਨ ॥

O Patron of the meek and the poor, I am the slave of Your slaves; I seek the Sanctuary of Your Saints.

I humbly ask, I beg of You, please relieve my anxiety; O Lord of Life, please unite Nanak with Yourself. ||2||35||58||

In plain words

You are the one who looks after the small and the overlooked.

I am glad to be among the humblest who serve Your holy people, and I come to their shelter.

So here is my plain and honest ask: quiet the worry inside me.

Nanak says: let me feel close to You, the very life of my life.

The best prayer is a simple, honest asking to be close.
The deeper layer

This is a simple, honest prayer: take away my worry and bring me close to You.

Deen bandhro means family and protector of the humble. Guru Arjan speaks with steady tenderness toward people who are looked down on. That is the same spirit in which the Gurus treated every person, whatever their family or caste, as equal.

Achintaa means free of worry. And the whole prayer comes down to mil: "meet me, bring me close." It doesn't ask for a prize. It asks for closeness. Think of a small child who reaches up to be held. That is the entire request.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for one quiet thing to settle your worry, what would you honestly ask for?
