In plain words

The whole world has slipped into a deep, dark well. O holy people, lift me up to the highest place.

Nanak says: in the Sangat I am set free. One glimpse of the saints was enough.

Even one glimpse of the Sangat can lift you out of the dark.
The deeper layer

When you feel stuck in the dark, the Sangat can help you climb out.

AnDh koop means a dark well. It is a picture of being stuck and not knowing which way is up. The verse says the whole world has fallen into it. So Guru Arjan asks the good people, the saints, to lift him to the highest state.

The answer is not fear. It is saaDhsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Darsan paykhat bhoree — one moment's look at them, and Nanak is set free.

Think of being lost in a dark building, then hearing a friend call your name from the doorway. You don't need a map. One voice is enough to turn you toward the light. That is how little it can take.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people whose company, even briefly, leaves you feeling lighter and freer?
