saarag mehlaa 4.
Saarang, Fourth Mehl:
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੜ੍ਹੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

O my mind, chant the Name of the Lord, and study His Excellence.

raam naam bin thir nahee ko-ee hor nihfal sabh bisthaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without the Lord's Name, nothing is steady or stable. All the rest of the show is useless. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, say the Naam of the One, and learn what is precious.

Without the Naam, nothing stays steady. All the rest is a show that bears no fruit.

Most things are a passing show; the Naam is what holds.
The deeper layer

Hold the Name, my mind, because nothing else lasts.

Jap man means "remember, my mind." Parhho saar means "study what is precious." The rahaa-o, the "pause" line and center of the shabad, gives the reason. Thir means steady and lasting. Without the Name, nothing is thir.

Everything else is nihfal bisthaar, a big spread that bears no fruit. Picture a sandcastle. It can be huge and amazing, but the tide takes it by evening. The Gurus call this the difference between Sach, what is real and lasting, and jhooth, the passing show.

A Question to Sit With

What in your life feels lasting, and what feels like a passing show?
