They alone are devotees, and they alone are attached to devotional worship, O Nanak, who are pleasing to God. ||2||56||79||

In plain words

The energy to try, the strength to act, the cleverness to figure things out — all of it is Yours. When You give me some, I can speak Your Name.

Nanak says, those who please the One are the ones who love the One and are drawn close. Grace reached for them first.

Even the strength to try at all is a gift you have already been given.
The deeper layer

Even our trying is a gift from the One. Those who love the One were reached for first.

Udam means effort, sakat means strength, and si-aanap means cleverness. The verse says all of these belong to the One. Even our hard work is grace, a gift we did not earn. Think of a kid proud of a sandwich they made. Then they remember who bought the bread and filled the fridge.

Deh ta naam vakhaanee means "if You give it, I can speak the Name." The last line speaks of jo parabh bhaanee, those who are pleasing to God. It means grace received: a love the One reached toward first.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of an ability you have that you did not create in yourself?
