Commentary

Raag Soohee, Ashtapadee, Mehl 1 (Guru Nanak)

The color of safflower fades in days; the color of the True One never washes out.

The Arc

Set in Ghar 9, this Ashtapadee turns on a dyer's image. It opens with kachaa rang kasumbh — the cheap, fugitive dye of safflower, bright for a few days and gone (P0). The rahaao answers: serve the true Dyer, and a heart fully colored cannot be re-dyed by lesser things (P1). The middle pauris widen the lesson — rest is not found by running (P2); white robes over a hard heart are empty (P3); craving has no bottom, but remembrance fills (P4); love, not strict accounting, carries a person through (P5); choose the Friend who stays (P6); the teaching ends the tug-of-war (P7). It closes on the Creator who sustains all — nidhaaraa aadhaar, the Support of the unsupported (P8).

Key Vocabulary

  • kachaa rang / kasumbh — the impermanent safflower dye; worldly attraction that fades.
  • rangan vaalaa — the Dyer, the One who colors the heart in lasting love.
  • sukh dukh daataa — the Giver of both pleasure and pain; contentment when this One is held.
  • nidhaaraa aadhaar — the Support of those with no support.

Themes and Cross-Connections

Two currents braid here: the impermanence of what dazzles (the safflower / kachaa rang) and the fastness of the real (sachay saytee ratiaa). The white-clothes verse (P3) is a classic critique of formalism — outward religious show without inward reality — foregrounded evenhandedly as a warning against empty display in any tradition. The closing name, Support of the unsupported, is the raag's tenderness at full strength.

For Raag Soohee

The dyer's vat is Soohee's home ground (it recurs across the raag). Here it teaches fastness: a heart truly dyed holds its color when everything cheap has faded.

Translation Notes

  • P3 (chitay kaprhay, mailay chit) is presented as a critique of formalism in general, not of any group; the harsh "beasts / thieves" language is bent toward the teaching, not the person.
  • P5's Messenger-of-Death and karmic-debt imagery is dropped; the verse's own resolution (love saves, the Forgiver forgives) is foregrounded.
  • P6 "die and mingle with dust" softened to impermanence.
