Raag Soohee
Commentary

Raag Soohee, Ashtapadee, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

After all the searching, it came down to one simple thing: keep the living One in mind.

The Arc

Soohee, Mehl 5 (continuing, no new Ghar). The shabad opens by citing the great scriptures themselves — Simritis, Vedas, Puraanas — as testifying that words without the living Name stay empty; the Pause then locates the boundless treasure inside the devotee's own heart, with sorrow lifting in good company. The verses diagnose and resolve: grabbing, quarreling, and ego leave one hollow; gripping "mine, mine" ties knots and tosses one between highs and lows; long searching lands on one plain truth — without the Name, no peace; aimless coming-and-going becomes a journey only through understanding; grace opens the door to good company and the sweet Name; countless millions search, but the One is seen as near the moment one understands oneself; and the whole set closes on a single joyful wish — to keep singing the good, day and night. The closing tally (8-2-5-16) shuts this run of Ashtapadees.

Key Vocabulary

  • pothee-aa — holy books, scriptures.
  • koorh — the unreal, the passing.
  • naam niDhaan — the treasure of the Name.
  • tat — the essence, the heart of the matter.
  • nayrhaa — near, close at hand.

Themes and Cross-Connections

Scriptures pointing beyond themselves; ego and clinging as self-defeating; self-understanding revealing a nearness already present; hard-won simplicity — a long inquiry landing on one plain conclusion.

For Raag Soohee

The homeward-turning warmth of the raag expressed here as settled conviction — the calm certainty of one who has searched and arrived.

Translation Notes

Verse 0's list of Hindu scriptures is read evenhandedly — not dismissed but honored as themselves testifying that the reality is beyond words; this is formalism critiqued only insofar as words are mistaken for the living thing they point to. The "heaven and hell" rebirth image (verse 3) and the repeated-birth images (verse 5) are rendered as the up-and-down restlessness and aimless wandering of the gripping or unaware mind, per the project's wellbeing approach.
