jan naanak bolay cha-uthee laavai har paa-i-aa parabh avinaasee. ||4||2||
Servant Nanak proclaims that, in this, the fourth round of the marriage ceremony, we have found the Eternal Lord God. ||4||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
In the fourth step the heart grows calm and settled. This is sahaj, the natural ease of one who has stopped struggling. The One is simply found.
Meeting comes gently now. The One tastes sweet to mind and body, and day and night my heart rests in that love.
What my heart most wanted has arrived, and joy rings out like good news. My whole being blossoms in the Name. I have come home to the One who never fades.
The last round is not more striving but a serene coming-home to the One.
The deeper layer
In the fourth round, the heart grows calm and the soul comes home.
Har cha-utharhee laav man sahj bha-i-aa har paa-i-aa — in the fourth round, the mind reaches sahj and finds the One. Sahj means natural ease, the calm that comes when you stop struggling. It isn't more effort. It is settling.
The One tastes sweet to mind and body, day and night. The heart's deepest wish comes true. Dhan hirdai naam vigaasee — the bride's heart blossoms in the Name. Vigaas means blooming, like a flower opening. Think of the end of a long trip: you walk in the front door and breathe out. You're home. Across the four rounds, the path goes step by step: a promise to live the teaching, then awe, then love, then calm union. Any heart can feel this coming home.
A Question to Sit With
What does it feel like, for you, to finally arrive somewhere and rest?
