The Color That Fades and the Color That Lasts

ਰਾਗੁ ਸੂਹੀ ਛੰਤ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਘਰੁ ੧

Raag Soohee, Chhant, Fifth Mehl, First House:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਸੁਣਿ ਬਾਵਰੇ ਤੂ ਕਾਏ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥

Listen, madman: gazing upon the world, why have you gone crazy?

sun baavray nayhu koorhaa laa-i-o kusambh rangaanaa.
Listen, madman: you have been trapped by false love, which is transitory, like the fading color of the safflower.

koorhee daykh bhulo adh lahai na mulo govid naam majeethaa.
Gazing upon the false world, you are fooled. It is not worth even half a shell. Only the Name of the Lord of the Universe is permanent.

You shall take on the deep and lasting red color of the poppy, contemplating the sweet Word of the Guru's Shabad.

You remain intoxicated with false emotional attachment; you are attached to falsehood.

Nanak, meek and humble, seeks the Sanctuary of the Lord, the treasure of mercy. He preserves the honor of His devotees. ||1||

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Listen, dazzled heart — why lose yourself gazing at every passing thing?

The world's glitter is like a flower dyed a bright color that fades fast in the wash; it looks precious but barely lasts. Only the Name of the One holds its color forever.

Let your heart take on a deep, lasting color instead, drinking in the sweet Word. And when you feel small or lost, know this: the One, the treasure of mercy, keeps safe all who turn to Him.

The world's colors fade like cheap dye; the Name is the one color that never washes out.
The deeper layer

kusumbh, safflower dye, fades fast; majeeth, madder root, dyes a red that never washes out — the classic Gurbani contrast between koorh (impermanent) and sach (lasting). baavray, literally madman, is rendered as dazzled heart: the tone is tender coaxing, not scolding. laal and gulaal, the deep poppy-red of a heart soaked in the Name. raakh laaj bhagtaanaa: the One guards the honor of all who trust Him.

A Question to Sit With

What is something flashy that wore off fast — and something quieter that lasted?
