Pride Passes; Become a Servant of Love

Listen, madman: why do you harbor false pride?

Listen, madman: all your egotism and pride shall be overcome.

Remain dead while still alive, and you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, if it is your pre-ordained destiny.

One whom the Lord causes to meditate intuitively, serves the Guru, and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar.

Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Lord's Door; I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice, a sacrifice, forever a sacrifice to Him. ||3||

In plain words

Listen, dear heart: why carry pride that isn't even real?

All the puffing-up passes; it was never solid. Walk humbly instead, glad to serve alongside good people.

Let the grasping self grow quiet, and you cross the sea of fear; serve the Teacher and drink the sweet nectar. I simply take shelter at the One's door, grateful again and again.

Pride was never solid; walking humbly is what lets you cross.
The deeper layer

garab gumaan — swollen pride, mithi-aa, unreal. sant prabhoo ho-ay daasaa: becoming a daas, servant, of the Saints — humility as freedom, not humiliation. amrit peejai, drinking the amrit, nectar of the Name. jeevat maree-ai, the die-while-alive again: the ego quiets, the person lives freely. Self-lowering language reads as honest smallness before something vast, not self-contempt.

A Question to Sit With

When has letting go of being right or important actually made you feel lighter?
