Costumes Don't Get You There — Listening Does

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
lokaa vay ha-o soohvee soohaa vays karee.
O people: I am in red, dressed in a red robe.
vaysee saho na paa-ee-ai kar kar vays rahee.
But my Husband Lord is not obtained by any robes; I have tried and tried, and given up wearing robes.
naanak tinee saho paa-i-aa jinee gur kee sikh sunee.
O Nanak, they alone obtain their Husband Lord, who listen to the Guru's Teachings.
jo tis bhaavai so thee-ai in biDh kant milee. ||2||
Whatever pleases Him, happens. In this way, the Husband Lord is met. ||2||

In plain words

I dressed up in bright colors and showed everyone: look, I look the part! But looking the part never brought me any closer to the One. I tried costume after costume, and finally set them all down.

What actually brings you close is listening — really listening — to the teaching. Whatever is meant to be, unfolds. That is how the heart finally meets its Source.

You can't dress your way to what's real; you can only listen your way there.
The deeper layer

vaysee saho na paa-ee-ai = you do not reach the Beloved by outfits or appearances. gur kee sikh sunee = those who listened (suniai) to the Teaching. jo tis bhaavai so thee-ai = whatever pleases the One happens — surrender within the flow. The whole shalok is a move from outer display to inner listening.

A Question to Sit With

When have you tried to look like you understood something instead of actually learning it?
