Verse 4 of 5

Real Joy Comes From Connection

ਕੁਆਰ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਜੈਸੇ ਕਰਤ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ ॥
ku-aar kanniaa jaisay karat seegaaraa.
I decorate myself like a young virgin;
ਕਿਉ ਰਲੀਆ ਮਾਨੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਭਤਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
ki-o ralee-aa maanai baajh bhataaraa. ||3||
but how can I enjoy pleasures, without my Husband Lord? ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You can dress up in your very best and still feel something missing if the one you love isn't there. The outside sparkle is lovely, but it isn't where the deep gladness lives.

The real joy comes from closeness — from being with the One you love. That is worth turning toward more than any decoration.

Deep joy comes from closeness to what we love, not from outward sparkle.
The deeper layer

kuaar kanniaa jaisay karat seegaaraa — like a young woman adorning herself; ki-o ralee-aa maanai baajh bhataaraa — how can she feel joy without her Beloved? Rendered as the simple truth that outward adornment cannot substitute for loving connection. The bridal metaphor is kept child-safe.

A Question to Sit With

When has being with someone you love mattered more than how anything looked?
