Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 129
Verse 5 of 5

Awake on the Outside, Asleep Inside

ਜਾਗਤੁ ਸੋਇਆ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
jaagat so-i-aa janam gavaa-i-aa.
When he is awake, he is sleeping, and so he loses this life.
ਮਾਲੁ ਧਨੁ ਜੋਰਿਆ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥
maal Dhan jori-aa bha-i-aa paraa-i-aa.
The property and wealth he has accumulated passes on to someone else.
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਤੇਈ ਨਰ ਭੂਲੇ ॥
kaho kabeer tay-ee nar bhoolay.
Says Kabir, those people are deluded,
ਖਸਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਮਾਟੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੂਲੇ ॥੪॥੩॥
khasam bisaar maatee sang roolay. ||4||3||
who forget their Lord and Master, and roll in the dust. ||4||3||

In plain words

Sometimes we can be wide awake and busy on the outside, yet fast asleep on the inside — chasing after things that quietly slip away and belong to someone else tomorrow.

The wake-up is simple and kind: don't forget the One who is always with you. Hold onto the love that truly stays, and let the rest come and go lightly.

Stay awake inside — hold the love that stays, and let passing things pass lightly.
The deeper layer

jaagat so-i-aa janam gavaa-i-aa — awake yet asleep, the life slips by. maal dhan jori-aa bha-i-aa paraa-i-aa — hoarded wealth passes to another. khasam bisaar — forgetting the One; the literal roll-in-the-dust image is dropped per wellbeing rules, and the teaching is kept as a gentle call to stay inwardly awake and hold the love that lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between being busy and being truly awake to what matters?
