Verse 3 of 4

Time Flows One Way, So Treasure It

ਇਕ ਆਪੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਪਤਲੀ ਸਹ ਕੇਰੇ ਬੋਲਾ ॥
ik aapeenHai patlee sah kayray bolaa.
First, the bride herself is weak, and then, her Husband Lord's Order is hard to bear.
ਦੁਧਾ ਥਣੀ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਲਾ ॥੨॥
duDhaa thanee na aavee fir ho-ay na maylaa. ||2||
Milk does not return to the breast; it will not be collected again. ||2||

In plain words

Time moves in one direction, like milk that has been poured — it doesn't flow backward, and yesterday doesn't return.

That is not a sad thing; it is what makes each moment so precious. Because today won't come again exactly like this, it is worth filling with love, right now, while it is here in your hands.

Time flows one way — which is exactly why each moment is worth filling with love now.
The deeper layer

ik aapeenHai patlee sah kayray bolaa — I am weak, and the Beloved's Order (bolaa, hukam) is hard. dudhaa thanee na aavee fir ho-ay na maylaa — milk does not return to the breast; there is no gathering it again. The one-way flow of time; the literal's finality is rendered as the preciousness of the present rather than loss. Time's irreversibility becomes a reason to treasure now.

A Question to Sit With

What is happening right now that you'd like to treasure because it won't come again?
