The Jewel That Wakes Within

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਸੋ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
jis no laa-ay la-ay so laagai.
He alone is attached, whom the Lord Himself attaches.
ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਗੈ ॥
gi-aan ratan antar tis jaagai.
The jewel of spiritual wisdom is awakened deep within.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
durmat jaa-ay param pad paa-ay.
Evil-mindedness is eradicated, and the supreme status is attained.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੩॥
gur parsaadee naam Dhi-aa-ay. ||3||
By Guru's Grace, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Only the one the One draws close can hold on. For that one, a jewel of wisdom wakes up deep inside.

Harmful ways of thinking fall away, and a wide, clear peace opens. By the Guru's grace, that one holds the Name close.

Wisdom is a jewel already inside you, waiting to wake.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan is saying: when the One draws you close, a jewel of wisdom wakes up inside you.

Jis no laa-ay la-ay so laagai means only the one the One draws close can hold on. Gi-aan ratan antar tis jaagai means "the jewel of wisdom wakes up inside." Gi-aan is wisdom. It isn't brought in from outside. It was always there, asleep, like a seed waiting for rain.

Durmat jaa-ay means harmful thinking goes away. Gur parsaadee naam Dhi-aa-ay means "by the Guru's grace, remember the Name." Grace is always here. It is received, not earned, and it makes remembering feel natural.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you already knew deep down, but only really saw later?
