Verse 3 of 5

You Already Know Me From Inside

ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥
tooN daataa parabh antarjaamee.
O God, You are the Great Giver, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਕਾਚੀ ਦੇਹ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
kaachee dayh maanukh abhimaanee. ||2||
The body of the egotistical human is perishable. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You are the Great Giver. You already know everything happening inside me. Nothing about me is hidden from You.

This body of mine will not last forever. Puffing myself up over it only makes me forget that.

The One who knows you from the inside is the safest one to be honest with.
The deeper layer

The One knows us from the inside, and this body won't last forever.

The verse calls the One daataa, the Giver, and antarjaamee, the One who knows what is inside every heart. Nothing is hidden.

Then: kaachee dayh maanukh abhimaanee — the human body is kaachee, like unbaked clay, yet people are full of abhimaan, pride. Think of a soap bubble showing off its colors. It is beautiful, but it won't last long. The verse isn't trying to scare us. It gently reminds us not to puff up over what doesn't last.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you pretend about that you could just be honest about instead?
