Setting Everything Down, I Come To You

dukh bhanjan jagjeevan har raa-i-aa.
The Sovereign Lord King is the Destroyer of pain, the Life of the world.
ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਰਣਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੩॥੧੯॥
sagal ti-aag naanak sarnaa-i-aa. ||4||13||19||
Forsaking everything, Nanak has entered His Sanctuary. ||4||13||19||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One takes away pain and is the very life of the whole world.

So I lay everything else aside and simply come to that shelter, trusting it to hold me.

You can set the whole load down and simply come as you are.
The deeper layer

When we set everything down, the One is there to hold us.

Dukh bhanjan jagjeevan har raa-i-aa — the One is dukh bhanjan, the breaker of pain, and jagjeevan, the life of the whole world. Raa-i-aa means king.

Then: sagal ti-aag naanak sarnaa-i-aa — setting everything aside, Nanak comes to the One's saran, shelter. Think of coming home after a long, hard day and dropping your heavy backpack by the door. You don't need to carry it anymore. You're home. That's the feeling of this closing line.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to put down everything you are worried about, just for a moment?
