Whoever meditates on the Lord's Name is emancipated; he chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, with his tongue. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The words of good and wise people are like cool, clean water — they refresh you right when you are worn out.

Whoever takes them in and keeps the Name on their lips finds something in themselves lifting and coming free.

Good words are like cool water when you are worn out.
The deeper layer

The words of good and wise people are like cool water when you are tired.

This is the "Rahao," the pause line at the center of the shabad. Amrit bachan saaDh kee banee: the words of the holy are amrit, life-giving nectar.

Think of coming in hot and worn out after a game and drinking cold water. You feel alive again.

Jo jo japai tis kee gat hovai: whoever remembers the One is set free. Gat means release, a good and open state. They keep har har naam, the Name of the One, on their tongue every day.

A Question to Sit With

Whose words make you feel refreshed and lighter?
