Where Honor Really Comes From

ਨਗਨ ਫਿਰਤ ਰੰਗਿ ਏਕ ਕੈ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਏ ॥
nagan firat rang ayk kai oh sobhaa paa-ay.
Someone may wander around naked, but if he loves the One Lord, he receives honor and respect.
ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਬਿਰਥਿਆ ਜਿਹ ਰਚਿ ਲੋਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
paat patambar birthi-aa jih rach lobhaa-ay. ||3||
Silk and satin clothes are worthless, if they lead to greed. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone with nothing at all — no fine clothes, no status — earns real honor if their heart holds love for the One.

And the finest silk means nothing if it only feeds greed.

Real honor comes from what your heart holds, not what you wear.
The deeper layer

nagan firat rang ayk kai oh sobhaa paa-ay — even one with nothing, loving the One, gains honor; paat patambar birthi-aa jih rach lobhaa-ay — silk and satin are wasted where they breed greed. Honor is relocated from appearance to the heart.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you think real respect actually comes from?
