Raag Soohee, Shabad 72 - The Teaching Belongs to Everyone

ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਸੂਦ ਵੈਸ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਕਉ ਸਾਝਾ ॥
khatree baraahman sood vais updays chahu varnaa ka-o saajhaa.
The four castes - the Kh'shaatriyas, Brahmins, Soodras and Vaishyas - are equal in respect to the teachings.
gurmukh naam japai uDhrai so kal meh ghat ghat naanak maajhaa. ||4||3||50||
One who, as Gurmukh, chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is saved. In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, O Nanak, God is permeating the hearts of each and every being. ||4||3||50||

In plain words

The teaching is not for one kind of person and not another. High or low, rich or poor, from any family at all - it is shared equally by everyone.

Anyone who keeps the Name and lives by it is carried through, because the One lives inside every single heart.

The teaching is shared by everyone, because the One lives in every heart.
The deeper layer

This one means the teaching belongs to everyone equally.

In old India, people were sorted into four groups called varnas. khatree baraahman sood vais are those four groups. Each group was treated as higher or lower than the others.

updays chahu varnaa ka-o saajhaa — the teaching is shared equally by all four. This line clears away those walls. Everyone stands level before the One.

ghat ghat naanak maajhaa — says Nanak, the One lives inside every single heart. That is why everyone is equal. Think of sunlight through a classroom window. It shines on every desk, not just the front row. Whoever keeps the Name and lives it is carried across.

A Question to Sit With

What would change if you believed everyone carried the same light inside?
