In plain words

The One is so subtle, so beyond reach, that I wonder how I could ever come close.

But when the Word cuts through my confusion, the Carefree One quietly settles right into my mind — no straining, no distance. It turns out nearness was possible all along.

The One that seems unreachable turns out to be near all along.
The deeper layer

The One seems too far to reach, but the Guru's word brings the One right into your mind.

Guru Amar Das asks a real question. Har jee sookham agam hai — the One is sookham, very subtle, and agam, beyond reach. Kit bidh mili-aa jaa-ay — so how can we ever meet?

His answer: gur kai sabad bhram katee-ai. The Guru's word cuts through bhram, the fog of confusion. Then the achint One — the One who never worries — comes to live in the mind.

Think of a foggy morning. The house across the street was there all along. When the fog lifts, you can see it. Nearness was possible the whole time.

A Question to Sit With

Has something you thought was far out of reach ever turned out to be close?
