Raag Sorath
Commentary

Raag Sorath, Chau-Padas, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

All you have is already His; rest on the foundation that cannot shake, and there is nothing left to fear.

The Arc

Pauri 0: the One is an ocean of goodness; home and possessions are all His, and with Him as keeper the world grows gentle. Rahau (Pauri 1): holding the teaching brings bliss, and in the shelter there is no fear; the One dwells in the hearts of those who love Him and has laid an unshakeable foundation. Pauri 2: whoever finds good company is carried across and given the sweetness of the Name. Pauri 3: the One becomes helper and closest friend, and with every breath one holds Him in mind and lives as a song of joy.

Key Vocabulary

  • gunee gahayraa: deep with virtue, an ocean of goodness
  • bha-o kateh nahee prabh sarnaa: no fear at all in the shelter
  • abichal neev: the unshakeable foundation
  • naam ras: the sweetness, the taste of the Name
  • saas saas prabh dhi-aa-ee-ai: remember with every breath

Themes and Cross-Connections

Security here is relocated: not in possessions (all of which are His anyway) but in an abichal neev, a foundation that cannot move. The 'every breath' motif makes remembrance continuous rather than occasional.

For Raag Sorath

Sorath's grounded calm carries the promise of fearlessness that rests on something steady.
