When my mind held close to the teaching, the road of fear fell away behind me.
Living inside a healthy awe, I found the One who is beyond all fear — and then I came home to a deep, natural calm.
Guru Nanak says that a good kind of awe makes every other fear fall away.
Gur charnee man laagaa: my mind held close to the Guru's feet, a way of saying it stayed near the teaching with humility. Taa jam kaa maarag bhaagaa: then the road of death and fear ran away behind me.
Now the surprising part. Bhai vich nirbha-o paa-i-aa: inside bhai, awe, I found the Nirbhau, the Fearless One. This bhai is not being scared. It is the wide-eyed wonder you feel looking at a sky full of stars. That big, good awe leaves no room for small, worried fears.
Think of standing at the edge of the ocean. You feel tiny, yet somehow calm, and your worries shrink.
Where does it lead? Sahjai kai ghar aa-i-aa: I came home to sahaj, a deep and easy calm. Awe, then no fear, then peace. The whole journey fits in these few lines.
What fills you with awe in a good way — the kind that makes worries feel small?
