Verse 1 of 5

Singing the Way a Hungry Heart Eats

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
sorath mehlaa 5.
Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl:
ਭੂਖੇ ਖਾਵਤ ਲਾਜ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
bhookhay khaavat laaj na aavai.
The hungry man is not ashamed to eat.
ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
ti-o har jan har gun gaavai. ||1||
Just so, the humble servant of the Lord sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A hungry person feels no shame in eating — it is simply what they need.

In just the same way, a heart that loves the One sings its praise as naturally as that.

Praise can be as natural and unashamed as eating when you are hungry.
The deeper layer

bhookhe khaavat laaj na aavai — no shame in eating when hungry; tiu har jan har gun gaavai — so the devotee sings. Praise as natural nourishment, not performance.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you do simply because you love it, not to impress anyone?
