He is beyond pain and pleasure, forever unattached; He is called the Lord of the world.

He dwells deep within your inner self, O Nanak, like the image in a mirror. ||3||5||

In plain words

The One is steady beyond every up and down, calm through all of it.

And that same One lives deep inside you — as near and true as your reflection in a mirror.

The One is as near to you as your own reflection.
The deeper layer

This one says the One is as near as your own reflection. Sukh dukh rahat sadaa nirlaypee — beyond pleasure and pain, never stuck to anything. This is the calm of sahaj, a natural, easy steadiness. The One is like the sky. Storms come and go, but the sky stays the sky.

So tum hee meh basai nirantar — that same One lives inside you, all the time. And darpan ni-aa-ee — like the image in a mirror. When you look in a mirror, your face is right there, close and clear. The One is that near.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you remember that what you're seeking is already close?
