Come Just as You Are

ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਕਬਹੂ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਨਾ ਨਹ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗਾਈ ॥
saaDhsang kabhoo nahee keenaa nah keerat parabh gaa-ee.
I never joined the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and I did not sing the Kirtan of God's Praises.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਕੋਊ ਗੁਨੁ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਸਰਨਾਈ ॥੨॥੬॥
jan naanak mai naahi ko-oo gun raakh layho sarnaa-ee. ||2||6||
O servant Nanak, I have no virtues at all; keep me in Your Sanctuary, Lord. ||2||6||

In plain words

I haven't sat with the wise as often as I could, or sung Your praises as much as I meant to.

I come with empty hands and an open heart: please keep me safe in Your shelter.

You can come to what's good just as you are, and begin now.
The deeper layer

Here the singer admits they have not done much, and simply asks to be kept safe anyway.

SaaDhsang kabhoo nahee keenaa means I did not join the company of good and holy people. Nah keerat prabh gaa-ee: I did not sing the One's praises. Mai naahi ko-oo gun: I have no good qualities to show.

This is not a heart beating itself up. It is a heart coming with open, empty hands. Think of a child who runs to a parent after a bad day, with no excuses. The parent opens their arms anyway. Raakh layho sarnaa-ee: please keep me in Your shelter. That open-handed asking is the whole prayer.

A Question to Sit With

What makes it easier to begin something good even when you feel behind?
