Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 140
Verse 7 of 8

The Name Outshines Every Ritual Bath and Gift

ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਭਾਈ ਭੈ ਮਰਣਾ ਸਚੁ ਲੇਖੁ ॥
gur mili-ai bha-o man vasai bhaa-ee bhai marnaa sach laykh.
Meeting with the Guru, the Fear of God comes to abide in the mind; to die in the Fear of God is one's true destiny.
ਮਜਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਭਾਈ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥
majan daan chang-aa-ee-aa bhaa-ee dargeh naam visaykh.
In the Court of the Lord, the Naam is far superior to ritualistic cleansing baths, charity and good deeds, O Siblings of Destiny.
gur ankas jin naam drirh-aa-i-aa bhaa-ee man vasi-aa chookaa bhaykh. ||7||
One who implants the Naam within himself, through the Guru's halter - O Siblings of Destiny, the Lord dwells in his mind, and he is free of hypocrisy. ||7||

In plain words

Meeting a true guide, a deep, loving awe settles into the heart, and living from that awe, all the way through, is the truest path there is.

Sacred baths, generous gifts, good deeds, all lovely, but the living Name shines even brighter than all of them.

Plant the Name inside, and the One takes up residence in your heart, and all the pretending simply falls away.

Good deeds and rituals are lovely, but the living Name shines brightest of all.
The deeper layer

gur miliai bha-o man vasai — awe settles in; bhai marnaa sach laykh — to 'die in the fear of God' means to let the ego dissolve in awe, rendered as living wholly from reverence, not fear of dying. majan daan changaa-ee-aa... naam visaykh — the Name surpasses ritual bathing, charity, and good deeds. chookaa bhaykh — the outward disguise drops. bhai is awe throughout.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you do that feels different when your whole heart is in it?
