Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 142
Verse 1 of 10

You Are the Giver of Goodness

sorath mehlaa 1 pahilaa dutukee.
Sorat'h, First Mehl, Du-Tukas:
too gundaatou nirmalo bhaa-ee nirmal naa man ho-ay.
You are the Giver of virtue, O Immaculate Lord, but my mind is not immaculate, O Siblings of Destiny.
ham apraaDhee nirgunay bhaa-ee tujh hee tay gun so-ay. ||1||
I am a worthless sinner, O Siblings of Destiny; virtue is obtained from You alone, Lord. ||1||

In plain words

You are the pure Source of everything good, while my own heart still feels cloudy and unfinished.

I come with empty hands, not with a pile of my own goodness to show off.

And that is okay, because every bit of real goodness flows from You anyway.

You do not have to arrive full of your own goodness; it flows from the Source.
The deeper layer

too gundaatou nirmalo — You the Giver of virtue, the Immaculate; nirmal naa man ho-ay — my mind not yet pure. ham apraaDhee nirgunay — literally 'a virtueless sinner'; rendered as empty-handedness before grace, per the wellbeing rules, not self-condemnation. tujh hee tay gun so-ay — goodness comes from You alone.

A Question to Sit With

What is a good quality in you that feels like a gift you were given?
